District to receive funding through Federal Education Jobs Act

December 15, 2010 - Governor Paterson has signed into law the legislation that will authorize the appropriation of funding for the Federal Education Jobs Act.

In August, President Barack Obama signed the Federal Education Jobs Act, a $26 billion law to save teachers’ jobs. However, school districts throughout the state were unable to obtain their allocated funds until now, simply because New York State had not passed legislation for regulations that allowed districts to receive their money from the State Education Department.

Funding through the Federal Education Jobs Act will help offset some of the loss of federal stimulus aid given to schools under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), which will expire as of June 30, 2011.

The loss of ARRA funding may impact a number of positions that were either created or restored with these temporary funds, including nine teacher positions, three special education teacher positions and six special education teacher aide positions.

Although the district will receive $634,341 through the Federal Education Jobs Act, the funding does not completely cover the loss of ARRA funds. In other words, the teacher and teacher aide positions created or restored with ARRA will not be covered entirely by the Federal Education Jobs Act funds.
