Ask the Superintendent - Nov. 1, 2006
It was early in the morning on October 24th, when Jim Riley, the Superintendent for Buildings & Grounds, walked into my office and said; “The scaffolding is coming down.” Those were words I had been waiting to hear for a long time. Finally – at last – thank goodness!!!
After waiting 10+ months since the residents passed the referendum for the C.J. Hooker Middle School Roof Replacement and Cupola Restoration, and after an exceptionally long and tense bidding process, the cupola has finally been restored to its original splendor. The work to replace the roof over the auditorium and the gymnasium has been completed for some time. Most of that process was unobtrusive and not readily visible to the community. It was the work on the cupola, however, that was a spectacle for all to see; first, in its weathered state and then for many months surrounded by scaffolding, and later encapsulated in tarps. The restoration process on this symbol of the Goshen Central School District was painstakingly slow because the damage had become so severe.
In the not too distant future, certainly within the month, the restored cupola with its new dimensional shading, will be bathed in a very soft energy efficient light from the outside and should we wish, lighted as well from within. If you have the opportunity, please stop by to see the finished results.
I would like to thank the community for their recognition of how important this project was, as well as their support in approving the referendum. Many years ago it was recognized the cupola needed to be repaired. This project, to the credit of two administrations, was attempted many times over the years. With each passing year, the “repairs” evolved into a necessary full restoration. It is now finally complete and we will be able to enjoy this landmark as it looks down upon our campus for a long time to come.
