Ask the Superintendent -
March 12, 2008
When the Evening High School budget was
presented to the Board of Education at the March 3,
2008 meeting, it occurred to me that many people in
the community may not be aware that our School
District offers a program like this. The Evening
High School has been in existence for 11 years, and
although its primary purpose is to help students
learn in a different type of academic environment,
the programs have expanded over the years to appeal
to a broad range of students.
Our Evening High School program consists of five
components:
1. Courses for High School Credit
Four Regents
level courses in English 11, English 12,
Participation in Government, and Economics are
offered. These courses are available to students
who have fallen behind in their academic work
and who will not graduate on time. These
students are unable to find enough room in their
class schedule during their regular academic day
and choose to extend their schooling by taking a
course in Evening High School. There are also
some students who have not been successful in
these required courses and take them again in
Evening High School to stay on track and
graduate with their class!
2. Alternative High
School Equivalency Preparation (GED) Program
This class is
for Goshen students who are not currently
enrolled in High School, who are between 16 and
19 years old, and whose class or cohort group
has not yet graduated. Students receive 12 hours
of classroom instruction per week from September
through June and must successfully pass the GED
Exam to earn their diploma.
3. College Courses
SUNY Orange, as
part of the Community College in the High School
Program, sponsors credit bearing courses to
interested students. This is another opportunity
for students to earn college credits in our
school. Over the past 2 years, our High School
seniors have had the opportunity to take
Calculus, Italian I, II, and College English I &
II. Goshen High School students are required to
pay a per credit tuition to SUNY Orange for
these courses.
4. Regents
Preparation
Students
enrolled in this program use their time (10
hours mandated by New York State) in an effort
to prepare to retake a Regents Exam. This
program has helped a great many students pass a
New York State Regents Exam on their second try,
thus allowing them to graduate with their class.
5. District
Tutoring
Evening High
School provides an umbrella for the District’s
middle and high school students who have been
removed from school for disciplinary reasons.
The tutoring fulfills the required two hours of
instruction per day in a much better academic
setting.
Most of the Evening
High School classes are small. The majority of the
teachers
are from our High School staff, which gives them
first hand knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses
of the students enrolled. Classes are held from 4-7
p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, from
September through June. This has been a very
successful program and has helped numerous students
complete their high school education and earn a
diploma.
