Ask the Superintendent - August 15, 2007
At one point in time last year I referenced, in
this column, how the volume of traffic has increased
on the roads in our community. We are all aware how
difficult it is when we approach certain
intersections to make that left hand turn or even
merge into oncoming traffic when turning right. We
have had to change longstanding ways of going from
place to place to avoid delays.
This increase in local traffic has had a major
impact on each of the schools in our district. Last
year in an effort to move our buses more quickly, we
developed a number of alternate routes at departure
times to get from one school to the other. One route
in particular added 1.3 miles per day per bus just
going from the C. J. Hooker Middle School to the
High School. It was the only way to meet the
published schedule. In addition to traffic
congestion, bridge closings required altering a
number of existing bus routes.
As we drove throughout the community this summer, it
appears the number of cars on the roads continues to
increase. Knowing how tight our bus schedule was
between buildings last year, our response has been
to change the starting and departure times for some
of our schools. We simply cannot maintain the
existing schedule and still be able to pick up our
students on time at dismissal. The former turnaround
time between secondary and elementary dismissal has
become impractical. In an effort to be proactive, we
have increased the time between these dismissals.
