Colgan, school psychologist, receives Ted Bernstein
Award
November 2009
Thomas Colgan, school psychologist at Scotchtown
Avenue Elementary School in Goshen, is the recipient
of the Ted Bernstein Award from the New York
Association of School Psychologists for excellence
in school psychology.

Judy
Moran receives Dean’s
Award for Excellence in Teaching
September 2009
Many years ago, after majoring in
German and then considering a career as a
veterinarian, a friend of Judy Moran told her which
career path she should take. “He said, ‘you should
be a teacher,’” said Moran. “You explain things so
well.”
Perhaps more than 20 years of high school biology
students should thank him.

Martha Bogart
honored for
25 years of service on Board of Education
February 2009
The members of
the Board of Education recently honored
fellow Board member Martha Bogart for
her distinguished service to the Goshen
Central School District.
A long standing school board member,
Bogart has served for 25 years on the
Board of Education. She began her first
term in December 1983, and during her 25
years of service, has served two terms
as vice president and one as president.

Mary Kay Jankowski wins Make a
Difference Award
February 2009
Mary Kay Jankowski,
a social worker at Scotchtown Avenue
Elementary School, has been named the
recipient of the Richard H. Aderson
“Make a Difference” award.
Jankowski, who has worked in the
district since 2001, was nominated by
Scotchtown Avenue Elementary School
Principal Daria Murphy. She lives in
Goshen with her husband, Stanley, and
enjoys taking walks, reading, walking
her dog and gardening.

Marisglio named OCAFCSE Teacher of the Year
December 2008
Janice Marsiglio,
Family & Consumer Science (FACS) Teacher at Goshen
High School, was recently selected as the Orange
County Association of Family and Consumer Science
Educators (OCAFCSE) Teacher of the Year.
Six years ago, Marsiglio began teaching in Goshen
and since then, has transformed the department from
a single teacher into a full FACS department. She
and her colleague, Mary Jo Budd, host numerous guest
speakers for their students in order to complement
the FACS curriculum.

Redeker wins third place in BrainPOP lesson plan
contest
October 2008
On October 16, the
educational website BrainPOP awarded Jonathan
Redeker, eighth grade social studies teacher at the
C. J. Hooker Middle School in Goshen, a third place
award in the Election ’08 Lesson Plan Contest.
Redeker used several Internet sources –- as well as
his passion for technology and politics –- to
develop the election project lesson plan for this
political season. In approximately eight weeks,
students were asked to create a Presidential
Portfolio while utilizing the BrainPOP program.

Elizabeth Olivo receives 2008 Dean’s Award for
Excellence in Teaching
October 2008
Elizabeth Olivo, music
teacher at the Scotchtown Avenue Elementary School
in Goshen, received the 2008 Dean’s Award for
Excellence in Teaching from the State University of
New York at New Paltz.
Olivo has been the primary music education teacher
at Scotchtown Avenue Elementary School for the last
20 years. In addition, she is the K-8 music
coordinator for the district and oversees the music
programs in the Goshen Intermediate School and C. J.
Hooker Middle School.

Kathleen Schmid
celebrates 35 years
with Goshen Schools
September 2008Kathleen Schmid has
taught a lot of children over the past 35 years. She
admits that she’s had to reinvent the wheel many
times, and is always looking for ways to keep her
students’ attention.
But for more than three decades, Schmid has found
that she can touch most of her students simply by
passing on one of her own passions: reading.
“I find that sharing my enthusiasm for reading
really makes a positive impression,” said Schmid.
“The students get really excited about the books and
constantly read ahead or check out more of the
author’s work from the library. Former students who
are now in high school will tell me that they
remember reading a particular book during my class
and how much they enjoyed it. It’s wonderful.”

Physical education teacher rides
262 miles in honor of 9/11
September 2008On September 8,
Carlos Rodriquez decided to take a bike ride -– a
three-day bike ride spanning more than 250 miles.
Rodriquez, a physical education teacher at the
Goshen Intermediate School, participated in the Tour
de Force 9/11 Memorial Bike Ride, riding his bicycle
262 miles beginning from the Pentagon in Arlington,
Virginia on September 8 and heading north to finish
up on September 11 at Ground Zero in New York City.
The ride, which raises funds for the families of
officers killed in the line of duty, is timed with
the seventh anniversary of the September 11, 2001,
terrorist attacks.

Bob Quinn wins
Asset Builder/Outstanding School Based Professional
Award
June 2008
Robert Quinn, a
school counselor at Goshen Intermediate School, was
awarded the Asset Builder/Outstanding School Based
Professional Award from the Orange County Youth
Bureau.
Quinn, who is in his 16th year as a school counselor
at the Goshen Intermediate School, was nominated for
the award by Mary Ann Knight, principal of the
Goshen Intermediate School. Jack Calzaretta, a fifth
grade student, served as student nominator.
“I feel humbled,” said Quinn. “I have wonderful
working relationships with my colleagues and my
students and am honored that they feel I am worthy
to receive such an award.”

Principal Daria Murphy wins
Administrator of the Year Award
May 2008
Daria Murphy,
principal of the Scotchtown Avenue Elementary
School, was awarded this year’s Orange-Ulster BOCES
School Library System Administrator of the Year
Award. This award is presented annually to honor an
educational administrator who has made a significant
contribution to school librarianship.
Mrs. Murphy was nominated by Scotchtown Avenue
Elementary School Librarian Christine Banuls on
behalf of all librarians in the district. In her
nomination letter, Mrs. Banuls explained how Mrs.
Murphy “has always been an energetic and spirited
supporter of reading and the library.”

Helt recognized by National Council Boys Scouts
of America
Donna Helt, senior
food service helper at Goshen Central School
District, was recently recognized and given an award
by the National Council Boy Scouts of America. The
award acknowledges noteworthy service of exceptional
character to scouting.
Helt serves as
Advisor of Venturing Crew 65 of Goshen and Council
Training Chair for the Hudson Valley Council. She
began her work with the Cub Scouts 12 years ago and
her sons, Ben and Chris, are both Eagle Scouts.
Goshen High School teacher wins Educator of
Excellence Award
November 2007
Jessica Weir, a
special education teacher at the Goshen High School,
was recently selected to receive the New York State
English Council Educator of Excellence Award. Only
12 awards were given to teachers throughout the
state.
Weir was nominated by English Teacher Antoinette
Gazzaniga, who unbeknownst to Weir, put together a
portfolio of her work and collected letters of
recommendation from Superintendent Roy Reese as well
as Weir’s students.
“Having observed
Jess in the classroom, I find her to be a master
teacher – reaching students of all academic ability
and managing to move them to be able to grasp
knowledge and to use it well,” said Gazzaniga. “She
understands her students and pushes them to reach
their maximum. In addition, the kids love her and
find her nurturing and caring; the conditions under
which they work the best.”

Sheryl Lynch wins Outstanding Science Teacher
Award
May 2006
Sheryl Lynch, a
kindergarten teacher at Scotchtown Avenue Elementary
School in Goshen, was recently named Outstanding
Science Teacher of the Southeastern Section of the
Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS-SE).
Lynch was nominated by her former colleague Midge
Monat, a Goshen Central School District retiree and
2001 award winner. Criteria suggests that a nominee
have at least five years teaching experience,
demonstrate exemplary science teaching, and
exemplify the professional teacher in attitude,
approach, diligence, dedication, and knowledge. A
nominee should also contribute to the school program
beyond the classroom and be involved in the
community and professional organizations.

Meredith Yatto wins Outstanding New Science
Teacher Award
May 2006
Meredith Yatto, a
seventh grade Life Science teacher at the C. J.
Hooker Middle School in Goshen, was recently named
Outstanding New Science Teacher of the Southeastern
Section of the Science Teachers Association of New
York State (STANYS-SE).
Yatto was nominated by her colleague and mentor,
Patty Sherman, who is also the Chairperson for
STANYS-SE. Criteria suggests that a nominee have
only one or two years teaching experience,
demonstrate exemplary science teaching, and
exemplify the professional teacher in attitude,
approach, diligence, dedication, and knowledge. A
nominee should also contribute to the school program
beyond the classroom and be involved in the
community and professional organizations.

Janine Robinson named New Middle School Teacher of
the Year
May 2006
Janine Robinson, a social studies teacher at
the C. J. Hooker Middle School in Goshen, is the recipient of the New Middle
School Teacher of the Year Award, which is awarded by the Mid-Hudson Council of
Social Studies.
Robinson received her bachelor degree from SUNY Albany and her graduate degree
from Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh. She was student-teacher at the middle
school, which led to her full-time position as a social studies teacher in 2003.
“I’m very surprised and flattered to have received the award,” said Robinson.
“Goshen is a great place to work.”
Kathleen Hoerup named Teacher of the Year
November 2005
Kathleen M. Hoerup, a physical education teacher at the Goshen Intermediate School, was named this year’s recipient of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance
(NYPHERD) Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award. Only one elementary-level physical education teacher in the state of New York is awarded this honor each year.

Cindy McGlynn achieves National Board
Certification
December 2005
Cindy McGlynn of Wurtsboro, a teacher at Goshen High School, recently earned the teaching profession’s top certification by achieving National Board Certification (NBC), according to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. She is one of nearly 7,300 teachers nationwide who earned NBC this year.

Transportation Direction co-chairs NYAPT committee
Peter Brockmann,
Director of Transportation at the Goshen Central
School District, will co-chair a special committee
dedicated to seatbelts, which was convened in
September by President Pat Bailey of the New York
Association for Pupil Transportation (NYAPT).

Science teacher works with NASA engineers for summer JASON project
Cindy McGlynn, an
Earth Science and Oceanography teacher at the
Goshen High School, at the Goshen High School,
recently traveled to Arizona and California from
July 23-Aug. 1 to visit various premier
educational institutes and research facilities as
part of the Summer Teacher Institute with the
JASON Project, a leading provider of
experience-based science and math curricula and
professional development for grades 4-8.
