Older vehicles were becoming corroded by rust, making maintenance expensive.

During the annual budget vote on May 17, voters approved the purchase of new buses and vehicles for the 2005-06 school year by a margin of 1,563 to 1,093. Six full-size buses, two wheelchair conversion buses, two van buses, and a service truck were needed to replace older vehicles requiring a high level of maintenance, as well as to address an increase in student enrollment.

The costs of the $777,224 proposition will be spread over five years, with no tax impact for the 2005-06 school year. In 2006-07, the district will begin to make the first of five annual payments. Twenty percent of the cost will be paid at the end of each year. Taxes won't be affected until 2006-07, which is the same year the school district will begin receiving state aid on the bus purchases.

Exposure to snow and salted roads caused several vehicles to fall victim to serious rust, make them expensive to maintain. The buses that needed a replacement had been in service for more than 10 years. Repairs were expensive and became ore and more frequent. In fact, many buses had more than 110,000 miles on them - which is said to be equivalent to 220,000 miles on a car.
