– At the Scotchtown Avenue Elementary School, students in Pat Kuttler’s
second grade class have grown to love the Times Herald-Record’s Mini
Page and have “adopted” it as their class newspaper.
These young readers choose to read the Mini Page during independent
reading time. According to Kuttler, independent reading is an important
component of the second grade reading curriculum. Students practice
reading and comprehension strategies, fluency and enjoy different genres
of literature.
“The Mini Page is a fun way for the students to enhance their reading
skills,” said Kuttler. “It is adorable to see how the children sit and
read like adults with a newspaper.”
