Middle School students, staff celebrate Cyber Bullying Awareness Week

Cyber Bullying Awareness Week bannerJanuary 23, 2012 - The students and staff of the C. J. Hooker Middle School celebrated Cyber Bullying Awareness Week from January 15-21.

Teachers incorporated activities and conversations concerning the troubling trend of cyber bullying into their daily lessons. Several students, with the help of Assistant Principal John Piscitella and Art Teacher Melissa Ochs, created posters that described the various roles that people take on throughout the bully process, including:

  • Bullied

  • Defender

  • Possible defender

  • Disengaged onlooker

  • Passive-supporter/possible bully

  • Supporters/passive bully

  • Followers/henchmen

  • Students who bully

The students were asked to reflect upon each of these roles and completed an anonymous survey to identify the role that they believed they fit in. Administration will compile the results of this survey and they will be shared with the student body during school-wide assemblies.

In addition, Principal William Rolon and Assistant Principal John Piscitella communicated with students via the daily morning announcements. Quotes, data, and statistics were shared and all students were encouraged to reflect upon this most important issue facing our youth today: protecting each other from the effects of cyber bullying.

“The Goshen Central School District is committed to providing an educational and working environment that promotes respect, dignity and equality,” said Rolon. “We will continue to develop positive approaches for the prevention, education, and remediation toward bullying and harassment in our school and community."
