January 23, 2012 – During the Board of Education meeting on January 17, the members of the Goshen Central School District Board of Education officially adopted a measure to provide tax relief to owners of property that was “catastrophically impacted” by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.
The Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee Assessment Relief Act – signed into law by Governor Cuomo on December 9, 2011 – allows all local governments and school districts to reassess properties in federally declared disaster areas affected by flood damage.
The new assessment can only be made if property has lost 50 percent or more of its value as a result of flooding. Each taxing jurisdiction (County, Town, Village, School district, Special Districts) must pass a resolution opting into the program by January 23. The deadline for a property owner to apply for assessment relief is March 8.
