– Students at the C. J. Hooker Middle School in Goshen recently raised
almost $500 for the American Heart Association during the Hoops for
Heart Holiday Basketball Tournament.
Students raised donations and competed in 3-on-3 basketball tournaments
during regular physical education classes in mid-December. Physical
education teachers ran the program to conclude their three-week
basketball unit.
“Students from across the nation participate in Hoops for Heart,” said
Donna Guarneiri, physical education teacher at the C. J. Hooker Middle
School. “It helps raise awareness about heart disease and allows our
students to learn more about the importance of good nutrition and
exercise.”
Hoops for Heart is sponsored by the American Heart Association and the
American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance
(AAHPERD). According to the AAHPERD website, Hoops for Heart is a
valuable program that promotes physical activity, heart healthy living,
and community service to children.
