February
17, 2012 - Brett Sutherland, a Goshen High School senior and
second-year cosmetology student at the
Orange-Ulster BOCES Career & Technical Education Center,
was recently chosen as a first place winner for the 2011-2012 New York
State Vanguard Student Recognition Award.
The Vanguard Award is given annually by the New York State Nontraditional Employment & Training (NET) Project, which is sponsored by the New York State Department of Education. The Vanguard Award recognizes nontraditional male and female students currently enrolled in Career & Technical Education programs.
Brett is one of seven statewide top winners, and was nominated by his Cosmetology Instructor Brenda Moore who cited him for his talent, motivation and commitment to the field of Cosmetology.
Moore is thrilled Brett was selected as the recipient of this notable award.
"Brett has a gift. He has natural talent, desire and passion," she said. "I truly believe he is destined to be in the appearance industry. He is a motivated student whose achievements speak for themselves. His personality draws you in, his professionalism is inspiring and his style is eye-catching."
"Brett's aspirations are big, but there is no doubt in my mind that he can and will accomplish his goals," Moore continued. "Brett is aware that he is a nontraditional student and he enjoys that others respect him for that. In reality, it takes strong desire and passion for a teenaged young man to join a cosmetology program in high school. Brett has taken on that challenge with enthusiasm and has proven himself to be a wonderful student and aspiring cosmetologist. He understands the importance and acceptance of males in the Cosmetology industry and he has evolved into a well-rounded and successful individual."
"Not only do I regard Brett
as one of the best male students I have ever had the honor of teaching
in the Appearance Careers Academy; he may just be one of my best
students ever!"
