February 8,
2012 – The C. J. Hooker Middle School library will receive
a $1,500 Cooperative Collection Development Grant through the Orange
Ulster BOCES School Library System.
Librarian Christine Banuls submitted her grant proposal in order to
acquire funding for a new collection of “pink books,” or romance and
“chick-lit” books, that are appropriate for female students in grades
6-8.
According to Banuls’ grant proposal, the current selection of pink books
is lacking, with only dated books available that have older,
unattractive covers. Current, popular titles are not part of the
library’s collection, and students are continually disappointed by the
library’s lack of available books within this genre.
While searching for a suitable collection of pink books, Banuls visited
a variety of library and librarian blogs, school lists and websites in
order to find titles that are free of inappropriate content, such as
underage drinking or foul language, but will still captivate the female
audience of all three grade levels.
The grant will allow the library to update and enhance its fiction
section with girl-specific genres. In addition, the extra funding
provided by the grant will allow a larger percentage of the library
budget to be spent on non-fiction books that support the
Common Core State Standards curriculum for next year.
