February
9, 2012 – On February 7, 88 fourth grade boys and their
fathers participated in the Goshen Intermediate School’s Third Annual
Fourth Grade Father/Son Fitness Night. The event was held in the gym and
hosted by Physical Education Teacher Mike Turi.
The main focus of the evening was the importance of living a healthy
life style, including exercising for 60 minutes each day and eating
healthy foods.
The boys and their fathers participated in individual and group rope
jumping activities. According to Mr. Turi,
there are several benefits to jumping rope, including enhancing your
leaping ability, foot speed, flexibility, coordination, balance, rhythm,
agility, muscle tone, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness. Rope
jumping also allows you to stay in shape when traveling; can be
practiced indoors or outdoors, including small areas; builds confidence;
and can be enjoyed alone or with family and friends.
Other physical activities that were discussed were walking trails, bike
riding, yard work and youth sport programs. Websites such as America on
the Move, NFL Rush and the Walking Site were emphasized.
Participants were given a wristband and certificate of participation for
this fun-filled evening of fitness, and were provided with healthy
snacks by the GIS Parent/Teacher Organization.
