24, 2012 - On May 23, students at Scotchtown Avenue were visited
by Sergeant Manna from the Village of Goshen Police Department. Sergeant
Manna partnered with Physical Education Teachers Cheryl Gage and John
Mardyniak to teach students about strangers and how to keep themselves
safe.
During his presentation, Sergeant Manna talked about the following:
Safe walking tips (stay with an adult, walk against the flow of traffic, wear bright colors, use sidewalks, no short-cuts)
“Stranger Danger” tips:
Don’t approach a stranger’s car
Set up a code word with your parents in the event of a stranger picking you up
Report strangers or strange activity immediately
Yell-Go-Tell! (This is not my mom! This is a stranger! etc.)
Abduction resistance – how to slip out of a book-bag or coat
Always tell an adult if something or someone is making you uncomfortable
The presentation was made in
accordance with New York State Educational Policy and Regulations
that requires districts to have a health and wellness policy and
adhere to health and wellness curriculum. One area of instruction
includes Child Abduction Prevention.
