District looks into sharing special ed. transportation services

August 8, 2011 - The Goshen Central School district, like several in the county, is looking into the possibility of sharing transportation services for special education students who attend schools in other counties. The article printed in today's Times Herald-Record was somewhat unclear. View the article

According to Robert Miller, assistant superintendent for business, several area districts transport only a small number of students to attend schools as far as Westchester County. At the present time, the law prohibits districts from piggy-backing with other districts on their contracted bus runs. However, the law does allow cooperative bidding for shared transportation services.

Miller states that a cooperative bid for a multiple-district bus run could potentially save money for all districts involved. However, the amount of savings, if any, is determined by the number of districts who participate, as well as the amount of the BOCES Coser, or the cost of cooperative service.

At this point, Goshen has passed a resolution in order to participate in the RFP (Request for Proposal) process. But until costs are finalized, it is not definite that the district will participate in the program.

“Every business decision is made based on the price, and at this time, the cost of the BOCES Coser and the cost of the individual contracts are not known at this time,” said Miller. “We can’t make a decision until we know if the cooperative multi-district bus run will result in savings for Goshen Schools.”
