Kindergarten students in Sheryl Lynch's class recently learned about monarch butterflies. Over the summer, Miss Lynch raised monarch butterflies and tagged them so scientists can track their migration to Mexico in the fall.
The students enjoyed the story "Gotta Go! Gotta Go!" by Sam Swope. They visited with the monarch butterfly inside a mesh tent, where they were able to see it up close and view how they drink nectar from flowers.
Some students were able to hold the butterfly in their hands and were able to feed it from flowers from the school garden. The children colored their own butterflies which they used to decorate the classroom.
There are several great butterfly sites that both children and parents will love:
www.journeynorth.org has migration maps for different migrating animals including monarchs.
www.monarchwatch.org has lots of wonderful butterfly information as well as the tags for monarchs.
www.thebutterflysite.com has coloring pages for children.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarch_(butterfly)
is an encyclopedia page about monarch butterflies.
