September 29,
2011 – Did you know that suicide is the third leading
cause of death in youth ages 10-24, after accidents and homicides? Did
you know that 12 percent of total suicides in the United States are from
that same age group?
In order to address these startling statistics and discuss important
information related to teen depression and suicide, the Goshen Central
School District and the American Foundation for Suicide Awareness will
host “ Teen Depression, Self Injury and Suicide Prevention” from
7-8:30 p.m. October 12 in the C. J. Hooker Middle School
auditorium, 41 Lincoln Avenue, Goshen.
This presentation is designed for people of all ages who are interested
in learning about the risk, signs and solutions for this problem. School
and area resources will be discussed and information will be made
available. This event is open to the public.
Presenters include Sean Gerow, MS CDPAP, Director of the Family
Empowerment Council; and Michael J. Hanrahan, MS CASAC LMSW, Goshen High
School Social Worker.
This presentation is a part of a comprehensive prevention program for
middle and high school students. Social Worker Michael Hanrahan will
present to all health classes in both buildings and “More Than Sad,” a
movie about teen depression, will be shown prior to his lectures on
suicide and self injury in those classes.
