On May 14, seventh
grade Family and Consumer Science students from the
C. J. Hooker Middle School attended “Y2K” at the
U.S. Army Second Aviation Detachment at Stewart
International Airport.
This yearly event acquaints middle school-aged
children with numerous careers and is an integral
unit within the Family and Consumer Science course.
Students visited with career specialists from
different career clusters, including health and
medicine, nutrition, sports and entertainment,
government and public services, construction,
automotive and social work. These professionals
talked with students and spent time answering
questions and explaining what their chosen career
entails.
“It was a wonderful
experience for the students since it was such a
hands-on event,” said Pamela Shaw, Family and
Consumer Science teacher. “The kids were able to sit
in an ambulance, try out hand-cuffs, manicure their
nails or enjoy professionally made food. They got a
real feel for a number of careers.”
