Information:

Mandarin Chinese is offered at C.J. Hooker Middle School via video conference through Orange-Ulster BOCES.  We meet every school day from 2:15-3:00 in room 236.  The instructor is Liam O'Neill, who teaches from the Harriman Learning Center.

A note about homework from Mr. Lewis:

As we enter the 3rd marking period, I think most would agree that the Mandarin Chinese program has gotten off to a successful start.  The students have learned a great deal of information in a relatively short period of time.  While your child may receive significantly more homework in Mandarin Chinese than in his or her other classes, you must understand that the amount of homework is integral to the success of the program.  Most homework assignments consist of workbook activities or character writing practice, which is the only way for students to effectively learn how to write the complicated Chinese characters.  If students do not spend time doing homework and studying on a nightly basis, they will begin to experience difficulty and fall behind in class. Failure to complete homework assignments will result in poor grades on tests and quizzes.  Students should continue to expect 15-30 minutes of written homework per evening.  Please keep in mind that this program is the equivalent of an honors level class that requires increased time and commitment.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding homework, they should be directed to Mr. Lewis or Mr. O'Neill.
