“Ending Hunger One Person at a Time”

About Us
Goshen School District Youth Ending Hunger Club was
established in 2001 through a Kindness and Justice
Grant sponsored by the Martin Luther King III
Foundation.
Mission Statement
The mission statement of the Goshen Youth Ending
Hunger Club is to educate and inform students of the
facts about ending hunger. The students use problem
solving and decision making skills to take action so
that no child will go to bed hungry.
This club is facilitated by teacher advisors, parent
advisors, and student members, and supported by the
Goshen School District and Board of Education.

Hunger Statistics

·
Every year 15 million children die of hunger.
·
35,000 die a day.
·
24 people die a minute….18 0f them are children.
·
Every 3.6 seconds someone dies of hunger.

twelve in the U.S. goes to bed hungry every night.
·
15.4% (2,794,560) people in New York State live in
poverty.
·
11.6% (38,159) people in Orange County live in
poverty.
·
It is estimated that some 800 million people in the
world suffer from hunger and malnutrition, about 100
times as many as those who actually die from it each
year.
Poverty in the United States
-
In 2008, 39.8 million people were in poverty, up
from 37.3 million in 2007 -- the second
consecutive annual increase in the number of
people in poverty (Census Bureau 2010).
-
The 2008 poverty rate (13.2 percent) was the
highest since 1997 (Census Bureau 2010).
-
In 2008, the family poverty rate and the number

million, respectively, up from 9.8 percent and
7.6 million in 2007 (Census Bureau 2010).
·
15.4 million Americans live in extreme poverty. This
means their family’s cash income is less than half
of the poverty line, or less than about $10,000 a
year for a family of four (CBPP 2007).

Nutrition Advice
1.
Pick Healthier Snacks
Promote healthier and more nutritious snacks for you
and your families. This will help encourage improved
lifestyles for all.
2.
Picky Eaters
Most children go through their stages of wanting their
favorite foods and refusing anything new; parents to
help this disagreement try offering these new foods
alongside their favorites. As time goes on, this
will become easier.
3.
Color Variety is a Plus!
According to the USDA, children need sufficient
amounts of fruits in vegetables each day to
guarantee proper growth and development. The more
colors on the plate the greater the vitamin content
in one’s diet.
4.
Media Influence
With society nowadays it’s no surprise that commercial
messages on television can influence what our
children want at the dinner table. This is not
necessarily a positive thing as most foods featured
in advertising are high in sodium, fat, and sugar.
You can help by having strong food and nutrition
values at home. You can also have the children help
pick out nutritious foods at the grocery store with
you.
