Syllabus

Goals and
Objectives:
English 12
is designed to introduce students to British
Literature and provide a foundation for the
next level of higher learning. Students will
continue their development of literary
analysis while strengthening their basic
reading and writing skills. To achieve
development of reading and writing, students
will complete independent readings during
the course of the year. Students are
required to read one independent novel or
play each quarter and complete a written
analysis of the said novel.
During class, students will complete a
curriculum based on the British history’s
influence on literature from the Anglo-Saxon
period through the Modern period while
practicing skills geared toward achieving
the goals of the NYS English Language Arts
standards.

Textbook: McDougal Littell Literature,
English Literature and English Skills
with Readings
In-class
Major Readings: Julius Caesar, 1984, and
Ophelia.
Research
Paper: Societal Issues - Due: December 13, 2011

Pens (standard blue or black ink for
class work; other colors will not be
accepted. For editing essays, please have a
red, green, or purple pen)

Grading
Policy:
Tests: 20% (Test corrections
will be available earning
partial points)
Classwork: 30% (This includes
projects and essays.
Late
papers lose 10 points a day from the
earned grade)
Major Assignments: 25%
(Must be completed with at least a 65% in
order
to take Final Exam.)
Quizzes: 15% (Reflect homework;
there are no retakes)
Homework: 10% (Homework
that is not graded
immediately, part of the
class lesson, may
be turned in one-day late for
half credit.)
Each quarter counts twice
and the midterm and final count once each,
as per school policy.
Anticipated
Assignments for all of English 12:
research
paper project and independent readings with
analysis.
