English 9 Syllabus Mrs.
Baker 2011-2012
Goals and Objectives:
English 9 is designed to introduce
students to literary analysis while strengthening their
basic reading and writing skills. To achieve
development of reading and writing, students will complete
independent readings during the course of the year.
Students are required to read one independent novel or play
each quarter and complete a written analysis and/or an accompanying project. During
class, students will complete a genre-based curriculum while
practicing skills geared toward the NYS English Regents and
achieving the goals of the NYS English Language Arts
standards.

Pens (standard blue or black ink for class work;
other colors will not be accepted. For editing essays,
please have a red, green, or purple pen)

1 1/2 inch binder with 5 section dividers

Electronic Dictionary and flash drive, if possible
Grading Policy:
Tests: 25% (Test corrections will
be available earning partial points)
Classwork: 30% (This includes
projects and essays. Late papers lose 10
points per day from the earned grade.)
Major
Assignments: 25% (Major Assignments
must be completed with at
least a 65 in order to take the Final Exam.)
Quizzes: 10% (Reflect homework; there are no
retakes)
Homework: 10%
(Homework that is collected will be
accepted late (after I collected it)
at the consequence of
earning only half credited for one-day late. No
homework will be accepted after one-day late. Homework that is
essential to the
class discussion or class assignments will NOT be
accepted
late, earning a 0.)
Each
quarter counts twice and the midterm and final count once
each toward the final grade for the year, as per department
policy.
Anticipated
Assignments for all of English 9: research paper projects and independent
readings with projects.
