Mrs. Browns Regents
Chemistry Class Policy |
Course Description
Regents Chemistry
presents any student,
regardless of skill or
ability, with a modern
outlook to
Chemistry. This
forty-week course
provides students with a
problem-solving basis
for understanding and
unifying the principles
of Chemistry culminating
with a Regents exam in
June. The
principles a student
studies in this course
will help the student
interact with the world
around them in a more
informed and educated
manner.
Course Expectations and
Evaluation:
Students will be
evaluated based on
tests, quizzes, labs,
homework and
participation. Students
are expected to complete
all evaluation tools to
the best of their
ability and to seek help
when it is needed.
Tests:
Tests will be given at
the end of each
unit. Parents will be
notified if their child
receives a grade of 100
or higher as well as a
grade of 64 or
lower. Review and extra
help will be provided
period 10 as well as
any period during the
day that a student has a
study hall or
lunch. Students
will be given at least 5
days notice before a
test will be
given. Tests will be
given during a double
period. The work on a
test is expected to be
the student’s own
work. Any suspicion of
cheating will result in
a grade of zero for that
exam as well as a
referral to the
principal.
Quizzes:
A quiz will be given
every Friday on the
material covered during
that week.
Laboratory
Requirements
Regents Chemistry, in
accordance with the
Board of Regents, has a
mandated laboratory
requirement. Successful
completion of this
course earns one credit
in laboratory
science. Each student
must be engaged in a
minimum of 20 hours of
laboratory
activities. Each student
must prepare
satisfactory written lab
reports to represent
these hours. At the
completion of the course
laboratory reports must
be kept in school for
six months following the
date of the examination.
Written lab reports are
due THREE DAYS after the
completion of the
laboratory
exercise. Lateness of a
lab report will result
in a grade of
ZERO. However, any lab
reports handed in prior
to the due date will
receive five extra
points.
Students who miss a lab
assignment will receive
an incomplete grade
until the lab is made
up. Any laboratory
exercise not made up
within the quarter will
result in a zero for
that lab. Parents will
be notified of any
incomplete laboratory
exercises prior to the
end of the quarter.
Completed lab reports
are to remain in the
classroom. Students are
not permitted to take
lab reports home once
they have been handed in
for a grade. The lab
reports will be stored
in a folder assigned to
the student by the
teacher and kept in a
location in the
classroom for the
duration of the school
year.
Lab reports are expected
to be the student’s
original work. Any
copying of lab reports
or materials contained
within a lab report
(excluding data) from
peers or former students
will be considered
cheating and result in a
zero for that lab grade
as well as a referral to
the principal.
Homework:
Regents Chemistry
requires a minimum of
four hours per week to
complete the theoretical
work (reading and
notes), problems in the
textbook, work sheets
and written lab reports.
There are two types of
homework in Regents
Chemistry.
1. Homework Checked in
Class. This type of
homework is checked at
the beginning of class
period. The student
receives either a
complete or incomplete
mark. These homework
assignments count as one
point.
2. Graded homework
assignments. These
assignments are to be
handed in for a
grade. These types of
assignments are expected
to be handed in by the
end of your assigned
chemistry period. They
will be accepted by the
end of the day (9th
period). The point value
of these assignments
varies from assignment
to assignment.
You will not be told
which type of homework
you receive on a regular
basis. Expect that all
homework will be a
graded homework
assignment.
Attendance
Daily attendance is
required in Regents
Chemistry. Lateness to
class, without an
excused pass, will
result in points
deducted from a students
Participation/Attendance
grade. Continued
lateness will result in
a referral to the
administration. Unexcused
absences will result in
a referral as well as a
parent notification.
Class attendance is very
important. Students will
be allowed four passes
to be used every
quarter. These passes
can be used to leave the
room for any reason. Any
unused passes at the end
of the quarter can be
turned in for “Raise A
Grade” passes.
Quarterly Grades
Grades will be
calculated as
follows:
Tests/Quizzes:
60%
Labs:
20%
Homework:
15%
Participation/Attendance: 5%
Extra Help:
Extra help can be
scheduled by the teacher
or by the student. It
can be scheduled for
period 10 or during a
study hall or lunch
period.
