Helpful Study Techniques

Remember:
  • You need to be an active studier - staring at your notebook or textbook is NOT studying. 
  • Be sure to try a bunch of different ones to see what works best for you
  • These are just suggestions.  Find what works for you.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask for help. 
  • Take advantage of 10th period with your teachers, we are here to help you.

Buy a set of multicolored highlighters:
  • Highlight key people one color
  • Highlight vocabulary words another color
  • Highlight important themes another color
  • Highlight important events another color
 
Make flashcards for each term.
  • highlight the top line of the index card the same color of the term or phrase (see above)
 
Ask your parents/guardians to quiz you using your flashcards
  • PARENTS- Ask your kids follow up questions- the more they can explain to you, the more they understand the material

Teach your parents, siblings, goldfish, teddy bear, or imaginary friend the topic. 
  • If you can teach it, you know it.
 
Write songs about topics, events, and/or themes and then sing them!
  • there is a reason why you know words to songs you don't like...putting ideas to music helps!
 
Recopy your notebook using different colors for different topics
  • it would be wise to use the same colors used for highlighting

Read your notebook into a recorder and then listen to it while brushing your hair or teeth, polishing your nails, lifting weights, making a sandwich, or whatever floats your boat
 
Listen to music
  • DO NOT WATCH TV - it leads to minimal productivity
  • DO NOT INSTANT MESSAGE ANYONE WHILE STUDYING- even if your study buddy is online, there are 10 other people who will be asking you to chat and get you off topic
 
Do not be afraid to move around or take short breaks while you are studying
  • Go for a walk
  • Make a healthy snack
  • Do sit ups/jump rope/yoga
  • DO NOT TURN ON THE TV
  • DO NOT INSTANT MESSAGE
  • DO NOT HAVE YOUR CELL PHONE ON
