All Goshen High School students will be expected to demonstrate positive growth and improvement in performance skills throughout the school year. Attendance at small group lessons, participation in large ensembles, performance evaluations, and culminating performances are all keys to a student’s success. Below are the procedures by which quarterly grades will be established.

75% Small group lessons/Quarterly performance evaluations:

Lesson/evaluation grades will be determined with the use of rubrics and checklists, specifically written for each type of evaluation. Through the use of digital recordings, students will also listen to and self-evaluate their own performances.

25% Large ensemble participation:

Positive and regular participation in the large ensemble class

Preparation of assignments/ability to play the assigned band music

Being on time for class

Being prepared for class (bring music, instrument, pencil)

Concert Attendance

The winter and spring band concerts, as well as the corresponding rehearsals are MANDATORY and count as the student’s mid-term and final exam grades.  If a student does not participate in the required rehearsal, he/she WILL NOT be permitted to participate in the concert, and this will be reflected in his/her grade.  If the student has an excused absence from school on the day of the concert, and is unable to attend the concert, he/she will be required to complete a make-up assignment to receive credit for the missed concert.  If a student has an unexcused absence from school on the day of the concert, and is unable to attend the concert, he/she will receive a zero for that concert’s grade.

Extra Credit Opportunities

A total of 5 points of extra credit per quarter is available. Students may do a combination of any of the following activities to receive extra credit.

Concert Attendance (2 points per event)

Music Research Paper (3 points)

Recorded Practice Time (up to 5 points)

Forms describing each activity in more detail are available in the band room.
