G.I.S. General Music

Jump to 3rd, 4th or 5th

Teacher: Mr. Hulick

Overview:

Our General Music curriculum concentrates on developing music literacy, good singing skills, and a comprehension and appreciation for the world of music.

Our goal is not only to increase our students knowledge, skills and abilities musically, but to have them leave here with a desire and interest to want to learn more.

Our program makes connections with other subject areas of study including language, math, science, social studies, health and phys ed, art, etc.

Students soon learn that music is really the study of everything else all rolled into one! An interdisciplinary approach is emphasized while meeting New York State’s Standards for Music Education.

Technology plays an important and vital role in our General Music program. Computer software programs and various internet web sites are incorporated into our General Music lessons and Chorus rehearsals and performances. Multimedia presentations via DVD, CD, and VHS media are included as well as digital audio and MIDI technology.

3rd Grade:

In Third Grade, our students learn how to sing beautifully and accurately by focusing on skills instruction and development in the areas of posture, breath control, tone production, diction and expression.

A strong emphasis is placed on developing good music reading skills. Standard western rhythmic and tonal notation are studied, rehearsed, and performed. An original program written especially for G.I.S. students entitled "Music Is" serves as the core for our 3rd Grade general music curriculum. In addition, songs from the Silver Burdett Ginn “Music Connection” series and original songs are studied, rehearsed and performed.

Our Third Graders work hard to develop skills needed in preparation for possible participation our choral and instrumental elective program which is offered from 4th Grade on.

The "Music Is" link from this site offers our students the opportunity to practice our songs and hone their music skills from their own PC or laptop - right at home!

4th Grade:

In Fourth Grade, singing and reading skills are further developed with an emphasis on interval recognition, sight singing, ear training, musical phrases, key signatures, chords, and the relationship between melody, harmony and rhythm.

New original songs are created, developed, composed, edited, studied, rehearsed and performed in the classroom and performed by our 4th - 5th Grade Chorus.

5th Grade:

Having developed good reading and singing skills in 3rd and 4th Grades, our 5th Graders spend a majority of time discovering, exploring and investigating the wonderful world of music.

Through educated eyes and ears, our students focus attention on Great Composers and the growth and development of American popular music of the 20th Century.

An emphasis is placed on Jazz, Broadway Showtunes, Hollywood movies (scores and musicals), Rhythm and Blues, Country, Rock and Roll, New Age, Electronic Music and World Music connections.

The various styles are discussed, compared contrasted and evaluated based on their content and effectiveness. Historical, social and cultural connections are made.
