The We the People
Grant:
I am pleased to announce that we have received a
grant from the American Library Association and the National
Endowment for the Humanities. This program,
We the People Bookshelf,
was developed to encourage young people to read and
experience quality literature while also exploring themes in
American history. The focus of this year’s bookshelf is the
experience of becoming American and contains the following
titles listed below.
This
grant was given to 2,000 public and school libraries around
the United States. It is my hope that these books will be
used as a sounding board for class discussion on what it
means to be American. Further, I would like to begin
collecting family stories of those who have experienced
becoming American directly. This could be from a
grandparent or parent or even from our own students’
experiences. I will be sending out collection/interview
forms to anyone who is interested in participating.
