Third
grade students
read
100 books for charity
From September 29
to October 2, students in Jura Schell’s third grade
class read 100 books for charity as a part of
Scholastic Book Clubs’ ClassroomsCare
program, a philanthropy-based literacy campaign
designed to teach children about the joys and
importance of reading and giving. This is the first
year that Schell’s class participated in
ClassroomsCare.
“I have a very caring and compassionate group this
year,” said Schell. “By having them participate in
the program, they’re able to do something for others
while being motivated to read.”

Udaypaul Chilana attends
National Young Scholars Program
If there’s a
mystery to solve, Paul Chilana can help figure out
whodunit.
From July 12-17, fourth grade student Udaypaul
“Paul” Chilana attended the National Young Scholars
Program (NYSP) at Union College in Schenectady. The
program is offered each summer to high-achieving
students who are entering third, fourth, fifth or
sixth grade.
While attending NYSP, Chilana participated in the
Discovery Strand CSI 1 (Crime Scene Investigation):
The Amazing Science of Detection. In CSI 1, Chilana
and his fellow scholars applied science-based
detective skills, used chemistry concepts to solve
crimes, developed logical thinking strategies to
unlock clues and created their own mysteries.

Kathleen Schmid
celebrates 35 years
with Goshen Schools
 |
|
Kathleen
Schmid, center, with Jane Unhjem, Asst.
Superintendent for Curriculum, and Roy
Reese, Superintendent. |
Kathleen Schmid has
taught a lot of children over the past 35 years. She
admits that she’s had to reinvent the wheel many
times, and is always looking for ways to keep her
students’ attention.
But for more than three decades, Schmid has found
that she can touch most of her students simply by
passing on one of her own passions: reading.
“I find that sharing my enthusiasm for reading
really makes a positive impression,” said Schmid.
“The students get really excited about the books and
constantly read ahead or check out more of the
author’s work from the library. Former students who
are now in high school will tell me that they
remember reading a particular book during my class
and how much they enjoyed it. It’s wonderful.”

October menus provide nutritious
-- and
delicious -- meals
Children’s
nutrition is no small issue and the Food Services
Department provides nutritious and appealing meals
for both breakfast and lunch. In fact, school
lunches provide one-third of the recommended dietary
intake for calories, protein and vitamins A and C,
iron and calcium. On average, a meal contains less
than 30 percent of calories from fat and less than
10 percent from saturated fat.
Your child can
choose from a variety of items, including milk,
juice, cereal and French toast sticks for breakfast;
and pizza, tacos, baked ziti and assorted sandwiches
for lunch.
