Third grade students
read 100 books for charity
From
September 29 to October 2, students in
Jura Schell’s third grade class read 100
books for charity as a part of
Scholastic Book Clubs’ ClassroomsCare
program, a philanthropy-based literacy
campaign designed to teach children
about the joys and importance of reading
and giving. This is the first year that
Schell’s class participated in
ClassroomsCare.
“I have a very caring and compassionate
group this year,” said Schell. “By
having them participate in the program,
they’re able to do something for others
while being motivated to read.”

Kathleen Schmid
celebrates 35 years
with Goshen Schools
 |
|
Kathleen Schmid, center, with
Jane Unhjem, Asst.
Superintendent for Curriculum,
and Roy Reese, Superintendent.
|
Kathleen Schmid has taught a lot of
children over the past 35 years. She
admits that she’s had to reinvent the
wheel many times, and is always looking
for ways to keep her students’
attention.
But for more than three decades, Schmid
has found that she can touch most of her
students simply by passing on one of her
own passions: reading.
“I find that sharing my enthusiasm for
reading really makes a positive
impression,” said Schmid. “The students
get really excited about the books and
constantly read ahead or check out more
of the author’s work from the library.
Former students who are now in high
school will tell me that they remember
reading a particular book during my
class and how much they enjoyed it. It’s
wonderful.”

Jason Carter named
assistant principal of
C. J. Hooker Middle School
Jason
Carter realized his dream of becoming a
teacher when he was only 15 years old.
At the time, he was helping his uncle
coach a Little League baseball team, and
the satisfaction he felt while helping
the young players perfect their skills
pushed Carter to pursue a career in
education.
“That was my first experience with
impressionable young children,” said
Carter. “It was an amazing experience to
be able to help them become more
successful on the field and achieve
their goals. It pushed me to teach.”
